Our Specialties: Philosophy of the Sengoku (Warring States) Period and The Beauty of Japan
Since our establishment, we have consistently pursued the beauty of the formative arts of the Sengoku (Warring States) Period (1467 to 1615). Our aim is to convey its splendor to the world through the creation of works of art that transcend national and ethnic boundaries. We offer a wealth of expertise in research across the ideology, religion and history of the period.
We conduct extensive background research and information gathering prior to creating arts and craft pieces from the Sengoku Period. We achieve the highest level of historical accuracy by replicating the same methods and materials used at that time. Our stringent approach to pursue authenticity has been highly evaluated overseas.
We Pursue the Uniqueness of Japan’s History, Art and Culture
We provide comprehensive consulting services based on the themes of “the beauty of Japan” and “the beauty of the Sengoku Period”. We have cultivated our expertise over many years of extensive historical research and verification techniques, allied with our capabilities in planning and production of arts and crafts.
We offer a wide variety of services including creating ideas for commercial enterprises, business planning, product development, and assistance with design and overall marketing. We also produce sales events and live performances in Japan and overseas, that feature armor, paintings, ceramics and lacquerware of the Sengoku Period.
Consulting Business
Our Consulting Business is focused on three areas:
1.the “Beauty of the Sengoku Period”
2.Total Project Management and Implementation
3.the Development of Corporate Values and Business Plans
We provide a comprehensive consulting service on all aspects of the Sengoku Period. Our expertise is based on in-depth research to the point where we can advise on a wide variety of fields. These range from planning, design, and guidance for products to the supervision of model sculpting, overall product development management and seminar lecturing.
There is a common denominator between the world's leading brands and companies that deliver unique high-value added services. It is the attitude and utmost importance they place on telling the story of their products and services. With an original vision and our own multi-faceted perspective, we can present proposals to potential clients by looking at the stories and histories associated with a specific location.
Career Background: Sakakibara Yutaro, President, Kensin Co., Ltd.
- Supervision of overall marketing activities at SECOM’s product planning division.
- Enterprise consultant at Sanno Institute of Management, delivering solutions to major companies.
- Founded Kensin Corporation in 1997. With the underlying theme of “battle”, Kensin established “ART OF WAR” as its brand and registered associated trademarks around the world in Japan, the European Union, USA, China, Korea, and other countries. The branding “Art-of-War” is based on the classic Chinese treatise, Art of War by Sun Tzu.
Our Passion: Pursuing Authenticity in Artifacts, Location and Substance
We are continually researching and working on projects with the aim of preserving and passing on the beauty and techniques of the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1574–1600) for future generations. These projects include a collaboration with Kyoto Dyeing and Technical Federation to reproduce a Sengoku Period jinbaori, a surcoat that covers armor and a kosode, a garment with small wrist openings.
Conveying the Beauty of Japanese Formative Arts to the World
Yutaro Sakakibara, president of Kensin delivered a lecture in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2019. He introduced traditional Japanese craftsmanship, its roots and his in-depth knowledge of Japanese art accumulated over many years of research. Mr. Sakakibara is active in widely disseminating this knowledge through lectures and interviews in Japan and around the world. Please contact us for lecture and seminar opportunities and media interviews.
The Importance of Story
Many top-ranking Japanese companies remain challenged when trying to market products and services. Some of the issues they face are:
“We have good products and are confident in their quality, so why aren’t they selling?”
“We offer a great service, but we can’t communicate it well.”
“It’s hard to convey our uniqueness when there are so many competitors.”
Japan’s manufacturing and service sectors are among the best in the world, but they are unable to effectively communicate their merits. We believe the reason is because the story behind the product or service is not properly presented to the consumer.
The Keywords Cute and Beautiful Don’t Sell Products Anymore
In today’s consumer markets, competition is rife and companies can no longer rely on cute and beautiful products to differentiate themselves.
As a company, we have consistently pursued the concept of “battle”. To us, this represents the charming beauty of the formative arts that emerges from the ultimate functional beauty that can make the difference between life and death. With this solid concept in place, we provide products and services that will appeal to customers for a long time.
Successes and Case Studies
Certified in 2001 by the Japanese government as a business innovation company
We collaborated with Mr. Miura Kimiho, a highly-skilled craftsman of reproduction armor, to create a uniquely designed one-quarter scale replica of military armor. The item, was well received around the world as being representative of the beauty of the formative arts of the Sengoku Period. Mr. Miura was an advisor to the Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor, an organization that has been highly-praised as a business for “cultural creation”. It was also certified in 2001 by the Japanese government as a business innovation company.
It is important to note that although armor has been partially preserved as weapons, it has rarely been accurately reproduced for fully-clothed figures. We are also concerned by the fact that most of the armor of famous military commanders have been lost and it is therefore difficult to imagine what they really might have looked like. We therefore started researching and creating armors to preserve the beauty of the Azuchi-Momoyama period for future generations. At the same time, we began creating accurately researched paintings of military commanders. This has led to us greatly influencing the current images of warriors such as Oda Nobunaga.
